Summer is a great time to head across the state lines on a family road trip, grab a quick weekend getaway, fly off to Europe, or a vacation in your beautiful backyard. However you may choose to spend your vacation this summer, always remember to protect your eyes.
Check out the four tips to ensure the health of your eyes this summer.
1.Do Not Leave Home Without It
Suppose you have chronic sickness and doctors have prescribed you to take regular medication. Now if you are going out of town for a few days, you will surely take your medicines with you, right? Cause you know how important it is to take regular medicine and you might not have access to your medicine outside the town just when you need it. The same goes for your eye care as well. So if you have dry eye, always travel with artificial tears or medicated eye drops your doctors prescribed. Preservative-free eye drops are your best friend while traveling. Moreover, they come as individual strips as well which mitigates the risk of contamination which makes doctors recommend it highly.
If you wear glasses, carry an extra pair and also a copy of your prescription in case you lose your glasses or break them accidentally. Same with lenses. if you wear disposable carry an extra pair in case you are running low on your lenses.
2.Protect your eyes from sunburn
Yes, your eyes get sunburned too just like your skin. When your eyes get exposed to the UV rays of the sun, it may cause inflammation in the cornea of your eye making them look red. This condition is called eye sunburn or Photokeratitis. You may also notice symptoms like pain, blurriness, tearing, sensitivity to light, etc. You may also feel some foreign object stuck in your eyes.
The best way to prevent sunburn is to wear 100% of UVA and UVB light blocking protection while you are outdoors in the sun.
3.Watch Out for the Pool
Most people eagerly wait for summer just so they can enjoy swimming. There’s nothing like a dip in a pool or ocean to cool yourself off from the sweltering summer heat. While you enjoy your time in the water, remember to protect your eyes.
Wear protective google while you are underwater. If you are a contact lens wearer, remove them before jumping into the pool. And once you are done and out of the water, rinse your eyes with clean cold water. However, if you feel dryness or itchiness in the eye after a swim, use a prescribed eye drop to moist your eyes.
4.Back to School is Sooner Than You Think
Summer ends in a fly so your kids will probably be back in school before you know it. Along with other preparation, get your kids eyes tested to check if your prescription has changed as vision change is very common in children.
However, if you meet with a sudden injury or eye emergency immediately check with a doctor, don’t wait to come back home to handle it. As some injuries can damage your eyes badly.
